The C-47 Skytrain was originally developed as a civilian aircraft that first flew in the mid-Thirties and revolutionized domestic air travel. The US military could not have picked a better aircraft to base a new transport plane on, and eventually more than 10,000 C-47s were built. The C-47 was extremely versatile and during World War II it saw action in all theaters, but the Skytrain is arguably most famous for its use during the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944.
On that morning more than eighty years ago, a C-47 with Lt. Col. John M. Donalson at the controls and the words "That's All Brother" painted on its nose, led the formation consisting of hundres C-47s that dropped thousands of paratroopers along the coast of France. Donalson's historic airplane featured the very distinctive black-and-white "invasion stripes" that made it immediately clear the plane was taking part in the massive D-Day operation.
